Mark and Doug are two Christian economists seeking to combine economics and theology in a fun, thoughtful, and inviting fashion. The name of the blog is a reference to Jesus' admonition to his disciples to be "wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew 10:16) when going forth into the world. We hope you join the conversation.

Green Acres is the Place to Be
Although not attracting as much controversy as the debate over immigration, our government's periodic wrestling with a new "farm bill" ought to interest Christians nearly as much. While I am not the expert to go chapter and verse through either the existing legislation or the new bill, I'd like to point out that Christians ought to take note of any government program that is criticized by everyone from the liberal evangelicals at Sojourners' Magazine (registration required) to researchers for the conservative American Enterprise Institute. Our farm programs are costly in expenditures, disruptive of free market policies both at home and in developing countries, and arguably help the rich at the expense of the poor.
